What is Integrative Therapy?

Integrative therapy is an approach that brings together elements from different schools of psychotherapy — such as humanistic, psychodynamic, cognitive, and somatic models — to create a personalised therapy experience that adapts to you.

At its heart, integrative therapy recognises that every person is different. What helps one client may not be right for another. That’s why integrative therapists are trained to respond flexibly, drawing on a range of tools, insights, and theories to support each individual’s healing process.

Rather than fitting you into a specific model, this approach meets you where you are.

How Integrative Therapy Works

Integrative therapy is guided by the belief that we are made up of interrelated parts: thoughts, feelings, behaviours, body, relationships, and meaning-making. When any of these parts are out of sync, we may feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected.

Your therapist may use different techniques at different times depending on your needs, including:

  • Self-reflection and emotional exploration (humanistic)
  • Exploring past experiences and unconscious patterns (psychodynamic)
  • Developing new behaviours and coping tools (CBT)
  • Paying attention to body awareness and stress responses (somatic)

The result is a therapy that feels responsive, dynamic, and uniquely yours.

What Integrative Therapy Can Help With

Because of its flexible nature, integrative therapy is helpful for a wide range of challenges:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Depression and low mood
  • Trauma (recent or historical)
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Self-esteem and identity struggles
  • Life transitions or inner conflict
  • Burnout or emotional exhaustion

It’s especially helpful if you’ve tried one form of therapy in the past and felt it didn’t fully connect with you.

What to Expect in a Session

Integrative therapy is collaborative. You and your therapist will work together to explore what’s happening in your life — internally and externally — and find the approach that best supports your goals and wellbeing.

Some sessions may feel reflective and emotional. Others may focus on practical tools, body awareness, or exploring how past experiences influence your present. The tone and structure can shift over time as your needs evolve.

There’s no single “method” here — only a commitment to being present, curious, and guided by what works best for you.
